Collaborative, Student-built Website
 |
Who: UMBC
What: Wikis |
Objective: Build a collaborative website using the UMBC library's collection of Lewis Hine photographs of US child labor in the early 20th century.
Process: Each student was assigned five images to research. Students wrote essays on their findings and organized the photos and essays by industry and state. Students then posted their work online using the Campus Pack wiki tool to build pages and create hyper-links. Grading for the collaboratively built website was based on the quality of content created.
Results: The instructor noted the ease of standardizing the look of each page and then linking them together, regardless of the students’ computer systems. At the end of the course, the wiki was exported from Blackboard and made accessible on the web here.
