Social Learning Software in a K-12 Setting

Community High School District 99

Who: Community High School District 99

What: Wikis

Objective: Create an environment in which K-12 students can learn, network, and interact with social learning software safely and securely.

Process: Campus Pack was adopted by Community High School District 99 because it was specifically designed for educational use—integrating easily into the existing online learning system while providing a reliable way for teachers to monitor activity and maintain a safe environment. The school brought together a small group of power users to serve as internal champions and to pilot Campus Pack’s wiki application. Once the success of the smaller group was established, the application was introduced to the larger population.

Results: From writing instruction and book reviews to group work in biology, the Campus Pack wikis are encouraging student interaction and increased contribution. While wikis are still a relatively new concept for incoming students, as well as teachers, Campus Pack has been well accepted and is proving an ideal solution for supporting group functions ranging from the simple to the complex.
